Le Fossat and the surrounding area
Chez Tortue is located in the pretty village of Le Fossat in the beautiful Vallee de La Leze surrounded by rolling countryside of the foothills of the Pyrenees, with the high mountains some 30 minutes drive away. There are lots of local amenities within 10 minutes. Le Fossat is a large, pleasant village, with a supermarket, pharmacy, general store, sports facilities, outdoor swimming pool and restaurants. The pool is large, clean and well-supervised, and also has a 'toddlers' pool.
Artigat an excellent and very friendly restaurant/bar L'Escale and a small but useful new general store. The outdoor swimming pool (Jul and Aug only) is clean and a good size.
Just
5 minutes from Chez Tortue is the pretty and intriguing Carla Bayle, birthplace
of the 17th Century philosopher Pierre Bayle. There are spectacular
views to the Pyrenees, a number of interesting galleries and a highly
regarded 'gastro' restaurant that has a conservatory dinning room with
magnificent views to the Pyrenees.
Chez Tortue is close to the Way of Saint James route. Artigat is also famous as the setting for the famous and strange tale of Martin Guerre, the case of stolen identity which eventually led the imposter to be executed in the village during the 16th Century.
The Leze River offers excellent fishing in a beautiful, relaxing environment.
